when i launched dhny 14 years ago, never in my wildest dreams would i have imagined where we are today. easily the most surprising and rewarding part has been the people. our clients. our partners. and the fact that what started as “me” in 2007 has become an incredible “us.”

yes, i’m referring to my left and right brain, business bestie, and dhny rockstar: sarah. because… it’s her 10th anniversary at dhny!

to commemorate this momentous occasion, we’re pausing and reflecting on our journey: the humble beginnings, the rise to stardom, and every important step along the way.

let’s pop open a bottle of celebratory bubbly and do this thing…

2011: quiet beginnings

sarah started with dhny in 2011 as a part-time junior designer. she was very quiet, completed each task exactly as asked, and generally didn’t make a fuss. she was everything i needed at the time when i was looking for help, yet still figuring out what the heck to do with my baby business.

2012: procuring a proper office

looking back now, i can’t help but laugh. that day that i officially moved from a spare room in my apartment to a proper office space felt like i had won the lottery. it was that feeling that my business was finally legitimate. sarah joined me in the studio part-time, and it was the first moment when i really believed we were going places. funny how a simple change of scenery can signify all that, isn’t it?

2013: turning my party of one into a true dynamic duo

in 2013, sarah joined dhny full-time, and who would have dreamed that the soft spoken girl i hired back then would become one of the biggest blessings in my life? she is now our indescribably-talented senior designer and project manager… not to mention a hella talented designer who pushes me to be a better designer myself. i simply don’t know what i would do without her. (keep reading for a fun q&a with sarah below…)

2015: receiving rising star recognition

i’ll never forget the moment i found out that we had been named a rising star by new york cottages & gardens. in 2014, my business was still in its childhood. to receive this accolade in 2015 felt as if i had “made it.” their description of our work as “fuss-free design, characterized by clean lines and a sophisticated palette” was a balm to my soul, reiterating the signature style we’d worked so hard to make synonymous with dhny.

2016: feeling particularly published

between summer 2014 and summer 2016, our work was published numerous times in nyc&g as well as hc&g (as an innovation in bath design award winner, a participant in the designer showhouse of new york, and a featured designer for one of my many hamptons projects). each time as complimentary as the last, further catapulting my business into stardom and quickly filling our project queue. what a gift! on top of the publications, we were lavished with several design awards during that time, keeping us on cloud nine indefinitely.

2018: growing our giftedness

following the glowing reviews and plentiful publicity, it became clear that our little team of two could no longer handle the day-to-day operations on our own. so we got to interviewing and hired an administrative assistant, bookkeeper, and social media specialist in 2018. (oh…and we are currently looking to bring on a junior designer…in case you know anyone…wink, wink!)

by 2021: design projects spanning coasts & countries

in one short decade, client projects took our dynamic duo to the hamptons, nantucket, the 30a region of florida, israel, and back home again to nyc. it has been a wonderful whirlwind, and i’d do it all again in a heartbeat. each and every space we have designed tells the story of the people who live there…no two spaces are ever the same, and i simply can’t even begin to select a favorite.

p.s. if you haven’t checked out our portfolio lately, please do so. some serious eye candy is just a click away…

meet sarah: my left and right brain, business bestie, and dhny rockstar

as i mentioned, sarah’s role has grown and evolved. it now includes creating floor plans, designing furniture plans, meeting with contractors and clients, handling vendor communication for all product information and pricing, creating all of the proposals we present to clients, overseeing all project procurement and management, and supervising the final installation. wow!

she is absolutely critical in helping bring to life all of the dhny design visions. have i mentioned that i can’t imagine dhny without her? oh okay…good! didn’t want you to miss that 😉

to celebrate her and her 10 years at dhny, here’s a short q&a with sarah herself!

darci: how have you seen dhny age like a fine wine over the last decade?

sarah: even though we are a well-oiled machine, the machine can always be improved. i’ve enjoyed learning something from every project and implementing it in the next one.

darci: absolutely agree. which design projects have been your favorite to work on over the last decade?

sarah: if i have to choose, my top three today are our pied-à-terre off 5th avenue in nyc, financiers pied-à-terre in tribeca, and the watersound beach new construction with gulf and lake views.

darci: mm, those are good ones. how would you describe your design style?

sarah: my personal design style is modern with a curated mix of vintage and new furnishings.

darci: where do you seek inspiration and how do you keep your work inspired and fresh after all this time?

sarah: i think part of the beauty of the dhny style is that it isn’t defined by current trends and will remain fresh and current for years to come, but in order to continue creating great designs, it is important to keep your inspiration cup and personal cup full.

i refill my inspiration cup by scheduling time to get out of the office, whether that be at museums, doing showroom visits, attending trade shows, etc. i would also say travel, but covid stopped me before i could get started.

to keep my personal cup full, i maintain a weekly ritual of “sarah sundays,” where i do whatever i want that makes me happy that day — an afternoon movie, manicure/pedicure, a yoga class, or quality time with friends and family. i always end these days with a nice home cooked meal, a glass of wine, and something on the old boob tube.

darci: that sounds fabulous. if you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?

sarah: i would literally go anywhere!!! sunbathe on a tropical beach? grabbing my sunhat and a book… safari in africa? making my list of must-see animals… camel ride in the sahara desert? i can see the oasis now… road trip around ireland? hello, future husband… 😉

darci: i’ll toast to that! speaking of… what is your favorite drink? (you know we love a cocktail around here!)

sarah: definitely a smoky manhattan.

darci: last but not least, what excites you most about the future of dhny?

sarah: growth. more awesome clients and amazing projects.

well, there you have it, folks… i couldn’t have said it better myself!

let’s all raise a smoky manhattan in honor of sarah and toast to the wonderful decade behind us, the limitless potential before us, and all of you who make what we do possible. it is a blessing and an honor to work for you and alongside you to realize the homes of your dreams day after day.

thank you, from the bottom of our hearts, for the love, support, and joy that you bring to our team. all of you are the essence of what makes dhny great…and i know we are just getting started.

so, if we haven’t met you yet, or if you’re a long-time client looking for a refresh…please give us a call when you’re ready for that next transformation…a livable, luxurious, and one-of-a-kind dhny home.
