A Candid Interview with Lewis Construction NYC President, Todd Lewis

DH: Can you share a bit about your background and experience in the construction industry?

TL: I started my journey as a carpenter during college before venturing into engineering tech sales and traveling internationally to troubleshoot printed circuit board manufacturing. The experience honed my skills in detail-oriented problem-solving – a crucial asset for overseeing construction projects. After becoming a GC in New Jersey in 2002, I expanded to New York in 2008 and later opened a millwork shop in 2012.

DH: What sets apart an exceptional contractor from the rest?

TL: First and foremost, exceptional contractors prioritize communication at every stage of the project. Clear and consistent communication ensures that all stakeholders are informed and aligned, minimizing the potential for misunderstandings and delays.

Additionally, top-tier contractors demonstrate unwavering follow-through. They not only make commitments but also deliver on them, ensuring that tasks are completed on time and to the highest standards.

Lastly, an exceptional contractor possesses a keen eye for quality. They pay attention to detail, prioritize craftsmanship, and strive for excellence in every aspect of their work. This commitment to quality sets them apart and ensures that the finished project exceeds expectations.

DH: What are key considerations when choosing a contractor? Any red flags to be aware of?

TL: There are several important factors to consider when selecting a contractor for your project. First, if a bid comes in significantly lower than other bids you’ve received, it could be a red flag indicating potential shortcuts or subpar quality of work. Additionally, be wary of bids that lack specific details or include vague allowances, as this could lead to unexpected costs or misunderstandings later on.

It’s also advisable for potential clients to visit other job sites where the contractor has worked and obtain references from previous clients to gauge their satisfaction with the contractor’s performance. These steps can help ensure you choose a contractor who is reliable, transparent, and capable of delivering the caliber of work you expect.

DH: Why is it important for homeowners to work with an interior designer alongside a contractor?

TL: As a GC, my skillset is implementing design, not being a designer. It’s essential for both the client and contractor to have clear plans and specifications provided by a designer or architect to ensure the project progresses smoothly.

Without a designer or architect involved, there’s no liaison to communicate between the client and contractor during the construction phase. This lack of communication can lead to misunderstanding and frustration about the project’s progress.

DH: How do you approach collaboration with designers to ensure successful project outcomes?

TL: When it comes to teaming up with designers, I see it as more of a partnership than just an advisory role. We’re all in this together, and that means working as a team to tackle any challenges that come our way. Mistakes happen, but the key is to find solutions without pointing fingers. By keeping the lines of communication open and focusing on problem-solving, we keep projects running smoothly and achieve successful outcomes.

One important aspect of collaboration is insulating the client from any problems that arise. When the contractor and designer can work together to address issues behind the scenes, it allows the client to stay focused on the excitement of seeing their vision come to life.

DH: Any advice for homeowners embarking on new builds or large renovation projects?

TL: Try to have as many decisions finalized before the project gets underway. Making changes mid-project can not only disrupt the timeline but also potentially increase the overall investment. By having a clear vision and making decisions upfront, you can avoid unnecessary delays and ensure a much smoother construction process.
