Modern Colonial Interiors Darci Hether New York Conneticut Design

From Chappaqua to Ridgefield and New Canaan, colonial-style homes offer timeless curb appeal and a sense of rootedness that’s hard to replicate. Their symmetrical façades, stately entries, and historic charm make them iconic. But what lies beyond the front door is where the magic happens—and that’s where we come in.

Sometimes we’re working with homes built in the 1990s—designed to echo historic architecture but outfitted with muted yellow siding, soft blue shutters, and dated finishes. Other times, the homes are truly historic and require thoughtful renovation alongside aesthetic updates.

In either case, our goal is the same: to create cohesion while honoring both past and present.

Understated Elegance in New Canaan, Connecticut

This gracious New Canaan colonial home had all the right bones—window mullions, traditional molding, and expansive millwork—but the interiors required a full-gut remodel to reflect the understated luxury and modern refinement our clients were craving.

By removing the original red brick surround, we made way for something far more refined. The newly constructed marble fireplace with stunning veining acts as an architectural focal point that feels both timeless and tailored. Clean-lined furnishings, tonal upholstery, and a textural rug offer warmth without weight.

A custom built-in, thoughtfully tucked in the corner, provides space for curated styling without visual clutter. Just beyond the living room, a light-filled window seat offers a quiet perch that subtly nods to the home’s traditional architectural roots.

Tucked just off the kitchen, this custom upholstered banquette was intentionally designed with a subtle offset—allowing guests to comfortably perch and chat with the home chef (or cocktail maker!). A modern circular chandelier and black pedestal table elevate the cozy space, creating a chic nook that feels just as inviting for morning coffee as it does for evening conversation.

Chevron stone flooring, a sleek open-leg vanity, and refined brass accents work together to create this jewel-box powder room. Traditional trim remains intact, but the aesthetic and materiality is quietly current—light, layered, and intentional.

This home now balances historic charm with modern ease—an elevated take on colonial living that feels deeply personal and beautifully current.

Refined Suburban Sanctuary in Westchester

Few things say “colonial” quite like the curvature of a grand staircase. In this Chappaqua home, we used craftsmanship and clean lines to bring it into the present—without losing an ounce of its charm.

The contrast between white spindles and a black handrail adds depth, while a sculptural Allied Maker chandelier introduces a modern statement. Below, oversized floor tiles with inlaid brass strips ground the space with a sleek, contemporary edge. Together, these elements set the tone for the rest of the home—a masterclass in layered simplicity.

In the living room, we reimagined the original red brick fireplace and traditional wood mantel—replacing it with a sleek, matte black stone surround that now anchors the space with moody richness. The existing built-ins were painted in crisp white and finished with modern hardware creating a clean, tailored aesthetic.

Dark velvet drapery infuses drama, while curated brass accents and layered textures bring warmth and balance. The result is a space that feels rooted in tradition yet unmistakably fresh.

Ahh… there’s nothing better than a serene escape. In the primary ensuite, marble surfaces, an oversized soaking tub, and layered lighting combine to create a timeless and luxurious retreat—equal parts refined and effortless.

Every detail respects this home’s colonial origins, while reimagining it with a calm, contemporary elegance designed for the way our clients live today.

Timeless Personal Oasis in Ridgefield, Connecticut

When it came time to design my own home, I was met with a familiar canvas: classic colonial architecture, with traditional molding, grid windows, and symmetry in spades. But instead of leaning into nostalgia, I chose to reinterpret these elements through a modern, restorative lens.

Traditional millwork wraps the living room, from the paneling around the fireplace to the deep-set windows and French doors—reminders of the home’s colonial roots. Yet everything else feels unmistakably modern.

A striking cobalt velvet sofa immediately draws the eye, contrasted by minimal lounge chairs in a soft, tonal gray. We played with negative space and clean lines, allowing each piece to breathe while still feeling intentional. The neutral palette, softened textures, and curated artwork work in alignment to bring the architecture forward in a way that’s elevated, but never stuffy.

In the dining room, it was essential to preserve the original colonial architecture—the wainscoting, window casings, and archway hold so much character! To modernize the space, we introduced subtle pattern and soft contrast.

A delicate, patterned wallpaper adds visual intrigue without competing with the room’s architectural beauty. Classic brass wall sconces bring a warm glimmer and timeless contrast against the contemporary gray palette. For the sake of balance, we kept the artwork minimal, allowing the millwork and layered textures to take center stage.

Soft grays, structured drapery, and tailored bedding create a sense of ease and balance in the primary bedroom. While the furniture lines remain classic, the palette and styling keep it feeling fresh, livable, and modern. A sculptural light fixture adds quiet drama, proving that even the most restful rooms benefit from a single statement moment.

Safe to say my home is a love letter to the colonial vernacular—reimagined through a distinctly modern, personal point of view.
